Most people who snore while sleeping are breathing through their mouth; the percentage is most likely 99.9% sleeping with their mouths open. When a person breathe only through their nose with mouth closed, it is much harder to make a snoring sound.

The first couple of nights, you must make a conscience effort to close your mouth and breathe only through your nose. You might even have to wake yourself up just to close your mouth.

The other benefit of sleeping with your mouth closed is that you'll never wake up with a dry mouth again unless you were drinking the night before.

Why do they not mention the fact in these myths that the person in question is actually breathing through their mouth? When you fall asleep from drinking, your mouth is mostly likely opened. When you sleep on your back with your mouth closed, you can stop the snoring. When there is a build-up of mucus, you are forced to breath through your mouth.
If you make an effort to breath through your nose on a nightly basis, you will stop snoring.
